ARLINGTON The Arlington Garden Club sold more than 2,000 plants and two tables of baked goods in front of the City Council chambers April 28, raising close to $2,000 in the process.
Garden Club member Sherri McCarthy estimated that nearly 300 people, including fellow Garden Club members, showed up to shop and make donations.
We made at least $80 off baked goods alone, McCarthy said.
Garden Club member Susan Van Buskirk touted the variety of planters, indoor and outdoor trees, fruits and vegetables, and flowers that were available while also lauding the generosity of those who stopped by to give, as well as to buy.
We had one man who was moving to New Mexico, Van Buskirk said. His wife had passed away and he just handed us all of their houseplants.
Garden Club president Linda Follett cited the groups range of community service activities, including the Mayors garden in front of the City Council chambers, their donations to state and national Garden Club scholarship funds, and fundraisers for victims of tragedies both local and far afield.
Weve given to the food bank and to those hit by the tsunami and the hurricanes, Follett said. After Katrina, we contributed to the Green the Gulf Coast national federation. These people had no homes, but by restoring the parks and gardens that were destroyed, we can instill them with a sense of hope because they can look at the flowers of new life coming back and start to feel better.
As attendees circulated through the Garden Clubs sale, Van Buskirk informed them of the groups seminar on Taming the Wily Wisteria, May 19, at 1 p.m., in the Immaculate Conception Church of Arlington. Tickets will cost $10 each, and Edmonds Community College instructor Cassie Turnbull will be offering her pointers.
