ARLINGTON In a hotly contested Wesco North match Dec. 11, the Arlington Eagles wrestling team showed enough to win 42-26 over the visiting Oak Harbor Wildcats.
Chris Myers got the Eagles started with a tremendous 15 second pin of his opponent in the evenings second match. In the first match of the night Jessy Bosley lost an extremely close 4-6 decision in the 152 pound class.
Houston Huber wasted little time dispensing of his competition at 171. He scored a near fall at the end of the first round to lead 5-0. Huber continued to flummox his opponent, extending his advantage to 11-0 in the middle of round two. Huber eventually scored a pin with 14 seconds remaining in the second round.
At 189 the Eagles found themselves in another great match. Jordan Anderson scored an early takedown to lead 2-0 but could not maintain that advantage. A takedown slam from Oak Harbor put Anderson in a hole 2-4 midway through the second round. Still, Anderson was determined and tied the match 4-4 with a reversal in the third. Trailing 5-6, his opponent gave Anderson a free escape and that tied the score with little over a minute remaining. At 6-6 it was anybodys match to win, but as Anderson dove in for a single leg takedown, his opponent countered the move and took him down for an 8-6 lead. Unfortunately for Anderson that was the way it ended.
Danny Pierce got Arlington right back on track, winning 3-1 on the strength of one escape and one takedown. Heavyweight Mark Davis also scored points for Arlington with a pin coming at 1:08 of the first round.
At 130 pounds Chris Berg was locked into a dead heat through two rounds 0-0. He trailed 0-1 after allowing an escape in the third and eventually succumbed to a late pin.
At 135 Nathan Shortt demolished his competition. He jumped ahead 11-1 after two rounds, scoring repeatedly on near falls and threatening to pin the entire time. At 1:20 of the third round Shortt finally did get the pin he was looking for, scoring another six points for Arlington.
With two matches remaining the Eagles led 33-26 in overall score. Matt Hale at 140 pounds sealed the win by crushing his counterpart 16-0, a win by technical fall. Dom Mangini closed off the night for Arlington with a win at 145, upping the Eagles overall record to 7-1.
I think that was a pretty typical Wesco wrestling match, said Coach Doug Byers following the event. Last year they beat us by one point, so we have a lot of respect for Oak Harbor.
