Arlington football suffers
two tough losses

The Arlington football team led nearly the entire way in their game with Lake Stevens despite losing star quarterback Brandon Gunter to injury in the first quarter.
Gunter tore a ligament and separated his shoulder early in the game and was replaced by Jake Parduhn for the Eagles. Parduhn did an admirable job in reserve of Gunter but could not prevent the Eagles from losing 18-14.
We started with some real adversity losing our quarterback, said Coach Tim Tramp, but we were still able to play and maintain a lead for the majority of the game.
Arlington got on the board first when Jerad Barber caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Parduhn in the first quarter. The Eagles added another score on a trick play before halftime when Jerad Barber took a pitch and completed a 7-yard scoring strike to D.J. Lockwood.
Arlington went into halftime leading 14-6 but could not hold on at the end of the game. Leading 14-12 and looking to run out the clock in the fourth quarter, Arlington received a tough call on a Jerad Barber sweep.
He fell down clearly in-bounds but the referees ruled him out. Instead of chewing up another 30 seconds, it stopped the clock for Lake Stevens, said Tramp.
It proved costly as Arlington was forced to punt and Lake Stevens had enough time to march down the field for the winning score.
Weve got to patch things up a little bit this next week, said Tramp. Were a good football team but we need to finish games off. Were still in the playoff hunt and weve got three games against teams we can play with upcoming.
The Eagles have their Homecoming Oct. 12 against Monroe.

Lakewood steals a shootout victory over South Whidbey

Emily Steinborn made two crucial saves in a penalty shootout as Lakewood brushed past Whidbey 4-3 on Oct. 2. The teams battled to a 3-3 tie in regulation with Hayley Bustad notching two goals and an assist for the Cougars.
That was one of those games that I would say is top five as a coach, said Coach Jeremiah Wohlgemuth, it was exciting to be a part of.
Lakewood made two comebacks, the first after trailing 1-0 in the first half. Erin Dierickx found Bustad on a through ball and Bustad finished to knot the score. Whidbey went back in front to start the second half before Amanda Nunley evened things again off a corner kick from Bustad.
Bustad scored a spectacular go-ahead goal to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead. She took a long through pass from Courtney Prosser and beat a defender one-on-one. She then danced around the goalkeeper and crushed the ball into the net to give the Cougars the lead.
Hayleys goal was one of the better moves Ive seen all season, said Wohlgemuth.
A late goal from Whidbey tied the score and sent the game into overtime. In the overtime Lakewood outshot Whidbey 7-1 and could have ended the game but were forced to rely on the reflexes of Emily Steinborn in a shoot-out. Steinborn saved two of the shots she saw, leading Lakewood to a 4-2 shoot-out victory.
It felt good to win that one, said Wohlgemuth. In the second half of the season well need to steal a couple games from the top teams in the league but were feeling pretty good about ourselves right now.

Cougars even their
record in volleyball

The Lakewood Cougar volleyball team evened up its overall record at 4-4 after a slow start to the season with an Oct. 2 win over South Whidbey. The match went the distance, with the Cougars outlasting South Whidbey three sets to two. The final score was 16-25, 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 15-12 in favor of the Cougars.
They jumped on us the first game, said Coach Monica Rooney. But the girls responded well in games two and three.
Games four and five were extremely close and well played. Whidbey had their chances in game five, jumping out to an 11-7 lead. But Tawnya Hulslander served five consecutive points for the Cougars, including three aces to put them up 12-11.
The Cougars held on to win the match behind the powerful spikes of Liliya Kibitskaya. Kibitskaya finished with a team leading 10 kills. Right behind her was Aly Stewart with eight kills. Stewart also led the defense with four solo blocks and five block assists. Sarah Boe finished with 11 digs and Peyton Mizell dished out 17 assists in the victory.
Even when they got ahead in the last game, we called a timeout, refocused and went out and executed, said Rooney. The girls believe they can win and are playing to win. They are playing aggressively now and that makes a real difference.
Eagle tennis on the rise

Its been an improved season for the Arlington boys tennis team. For the first time in 15 years the team has won four matches. They still have a number of winnable matches ahead of them and should add to their total.
I mixed up the lineup quite a bit against Stanwood, said Coach Ben Mendro following his squads recent 2-5 defeat. Were considering the league tournament at the end of the year by putting Jacob Aylesworth and Garret Meyer together in doubles.
Aylesworth and Meyer have been the No. 1 and No. 2 singles players all year for the Eagles but they have a better chance of success at districts playing together.
We made that decision to move them last week and I assumed they would take over the No. 1 doubles slot, said Mendro. But Max Morin and Will Heath challenged them and won, keeping their current No. 1 spot. We keep having practice rained out and havent had a chance to rechallenge, so thats where they are right now.
Aylesworth and Meyer won their match together against Stanwood as did No. 3 doubles Nick Morin and Ari Fernando.
Arlington beat Everett 4-3 on Oct. 1 behind wins from three of their four singles players. Meyer, Josh McElroy, and Cobly Boulton all defeated their Seagull opponents and the doubles tandem of Morin and Heath tallied an easy 6-1, 6-0 win to put the Eagles over the top.

Arlington soccer
endures a rough week

Arlington soccer hit a rough patch this week as four JV players were called up to varsity do to injury and suspension. The Eagles played two matches, losing 2-0 to Oak Harbor and 4-1 to Snohomish.
Against Snohomish we actually played alright, said Coach Nathan Davis. Samantha Coy had her best game of the year, including a terrific free kick to set up our goal. Kristen Allen did a nice job again and tapped in the rebound from Samanthas shot. We were without Jessica Van Loo who sprained her knee in training. We just didnt have enough.
The team did manage to score the first goal against Snohomish this season, snapping a ten game scoreless streak by the Panthers.
Against Oak Harbor we defended well but had trouble breaking through, said Davis. Ginny Wilson did a good job in goal for us in her first game on varsity. We hit the post four times on offense. Weve got a lot of work cut out for us in the coming weeks.

Darrington sneaks out another victory, remains undefeated

The tidal wave of momentum surrounding Darrington football just got a little higher after a 15-14 win over Concrete on Oct. 5. The undefeated Loggers found themselves in a big test of character and managed to pull out a victory.
We got lucky, said Coach Fred Emerson after the game, we got outplayed most of the game. They played extremely well, we did not play that well and were going to figure out why.
Darrington got a 45-yard touchdown run from Mike Parris in the second quarter and a PAT by Joe Dolph to trail 14-7 at halftime. In the fourth quarter, quarterback Mark Jones found Cory Hoveskeland on a 61-yard scoring pass to put Darrington within 14-13. Instead of going for the extra point and tie, Emerson asked his players what they wanted to do. They chose to go for a two-point conversion and Justin ODell rumbled into the end-zone from three yards out to give the Loggers the lead 15-14. Despite their struggles to move the ball, Darrington found a way to win against a tough Concrete team.
Bottom line, Darrington remains undefeated at 6-0 with three regular season games remaining. It is a terrific turnaround for a team that did not win a league game last season.
Were going back to the drawing board, said Emerson. We didnt have a good week of practice coming in and we got outcoached in the game itself. We were downright lucky to win it.
The Loggers will look to continue their streak against LaConner on Oct. 12.
