Mark Lovejoy, owner of Garden Treasures nursery and produce market on SR 530 near Island Crossing, opened a new farmers market in historic downtown Saturday morning, Aug. 25, at Fourth Street west of SR 9.
He said that he will be adding other vendors with fresh-cut flowers from local growers and pan dolce from the Mexican bakery across the highway.
On his first Saturday out on the street, Lovejoy sold a wide variety of vegetables, from heirloom tomatoes, purple, yellow and green beans and cucumbers from his own farm as well as Gravenstein apples from Stanwood and peaches from Okanogan. He said that corn is coming on strong.
The farmers market will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays through September at Valley Gem Farm on SR 9, courtesy of property owner Dan Grewe. Another farmers market at the Village Store on East Gilman Street (formerly Country Charm) is starting to take hold in Arlington with five vendors selling berries, landscape plants and homemade soaps, from 4 – 7 p.m. Thursdays, to continue also through September.
