Arlington soccer earns draw with Marysville
The Arlington girls soccer team made a comeback against a tough Marysville team to claim a 1-1 draw at Marysville.
The Sept. 25 contest was dominated by the Eagle midfield of Morgan Galusha, Kristen Allen, and Kristina Longosky. The three top-tier midfielders maintained possession for Arlington for the majority of the game. Marysville scored first on a quick strike goal. The Tomahawks got a break on a counter-attack and put one past Arlington keeper Andrea Parlin to lead 1-0.
We knew we were controlling the game, said Coach Nathan Davis, but we needed to finish something.
In the second half Kristen Allen nodded a corner kick on goal and Longosky cleaned up the rebound to knot the score at 1-1. Neither team could break through in the remaining twenty minutes and the game ended a draw.
I thought Morgan and Kristen were exceptional, said Davis. We continue to dominate play through them. Samantha Coy in the back has also been improving as a sweeper for us. Shes only a freshman but shes proving she belongs back there.
We need more combinations in the attack, said Longosky about the match. We need more offense to put teams away.
Her teammate Morgan Galusha felt similarly.
We had so many chances, lamented Galusha. Sometimes were too unselfish. We pass when we should shoot. Were working on it in practice and I expect us to do much better in the second half of the year.
Darrington laps LaConner
The Darrington Logger football team continued its strong season by defeating LaConner 40-0 on Sept. 28.
The team got 70 yards passing from Mark Jones to go along with nearly 300 yards of offense on the ground. Justin ODell, Mike Parris, and Joe Dolph all scored touchdowns on the ground for the Loggers, with Parris and ODell going in twice each. Jones also completed a 14-yard scoring pass to Cory Hoveskeland to complete the scoring.
They were tough to begin with in the first quarter, said Coach Fred Emerson. I thought they would score but they didnt. They got close twice, but the kids held in there and they made a couple mistakes that helped us a little bit.
Emerson praised his lineman, particularly Nick Olson and Scott Rebelbrugge, who dominated the line of scrimmage.
We also had some great performances turned in by our offensive guys, said Emerson. Joe Dolph had his best game of the season. Justin ODell ran extremely hard all night. Mike Parris had a great move on the last score of the game. Mark Jones led the team the way hes been leading it all season.
The defense did a spectacular job as well, keeping LaConner completely scoreless.
When you hold a team to zero in this league, well, thats pretty good, said Emerson. Theres a long way to go in the season but Darrington may be on their way to one of the best years in school football history.
Lakewood soccer blows past Coupeville
The Lakewood Cougar soccer team put it all together in their demolition of Coupeville on Sept. 27. Playing on a small field and using a different formation than usual, Coach Jeremiah Wohlgemuths team won 5-1, getting goals from five different players.
A penalty kick score from Jeneca Hoidal just before halftime opened the scoring for the Cougars and they controlled the entire second half.
I played a 4-3-3 with opened things up for Erin Dierickx to control play, said Wohlgemuth. The whole team opened up a bit.
Scoring in the second half were Melissa Osburn, Hayley Bustad, Amanda Nunley, and Emily Steinborn. Steinborn got a chance to play the field after spending a majority of the game as goalkeeper.
Emily took a ball in midfield, went one-on-one, beat a defender and put a shot in the upper corner of the goal.
Becca Bean added two assists.
Becca did a great job running up and down the sidelines, said Wohlgemuth. She put a bunch of crosses in front of goal.
The team plays Sultan next on Oct. 4.
Lakewood volleyball back on winning track
The Lakewood Cougars took down the Coupeville Wolves in Cascade Conference action Sept. 27. After breezing through the first two sets 25-9, 25-7, the Cougars dropped the third before squeaking out victory in the fourth.
We started out the game strong, said Coach Monica Rooney. We played aggressive volleyball and served really well.
Liliya Kibitskaya served nine straight points in the first game for the Cougars, including five aces. Teammate Jocelyn Shafer served eight consecutive points in the second game and finished 21 for 21 on serves for the night.
We mentally let up in game three, said Rooney. And in game four we had a 10-point lead before letting them back in it. We need to continue to maintain our focus throughout matches.
For the victorious Cougars Aly Stewart led the way with 11 kills, Peyton Mizell added 23 assists.
It was great to get a win, said Rooney, but we need to continue to play aggressive volleyball.
