Buzzer-beater keeps Eagle girls season alive

ARLINGTON The Arlington girls basketball team trailed Everett in every quarter of their 62-60 win Feb. 26, except the most important one.
The Eagle girls led the first half for all of a few seconds when a three-pointer from sophomore guard Sheryl Scheppele was quickly answered by Everett freshman Ashley Hope, ending a brief 7-4 lead.
By building on some early Arlington mistakes, the Seagulls proceeded on a 14-2 run extending into the second quarter to lead by as many as 12 points. During the scoring spree, Everett senior guard Erika Hornyak sank the first of her seven field goals a three on her way to a game-high 20-point performance.
Arlington struggled the rest of the half to stage a comeback, narrowing their deficit to seven points for a halftime score of 31-24.
After the game, Eagles coach Nathan Davis explained his teams halftime adjustments.
We ran a special defense, but they kind of beat us to the punch, he said. We switched to man defense.
And with the change in defensive strategy, a stir began to rouse the field house, beginning with the Arlington team and extending quickly to their fans on the play of seniors Shayna Prause and Alyssa Marsh. Marsh followed a mid-third quarter basket with a trip to the charity stripe, and though she sank only the first of two, it closed the Eagles to within a possession of tying the game with 5:26 left in the period.
It was Marshs first three points of the game on her way to what Davis called her personal best performance with 5-for-7 shooting and 12 points.
Marsh and Prause accounted for 15 of the Eagles 19 third-quarter points and though Everett regained the lead with less than a minute remaining in the period, a perceptible change in momentum had occurred.
Fifteen seconds into the final period, Scheppele hit her fourth three-point basket to close Everetts lead to 48-46. Though Arlington would not lead for the next seven minutes and 43 seconds, the Eagles tied the game up three times in the period and let Everett build no greater lead than four points.
With 1:49 left, a field goal from Arlington sophomore guard Kyra Prause tied the game 60-60. For more than a minute, neither team was able to get the better of the other. Then, with 16 seconds remaining and overtime seeming more and more probable, Arlington junior Kjirsten Jensen grabbed the ball from under Everetts basket.
And with two seconds remaining, Marsh made the game-winning basket.
Alyssa had the best game of her life, Davis said after the game.
Everett coach Kelly McCoy, whose teams season ended with the loss, credited Arlington with slowing down her leading scorer, Hornyak.
I think that (Kyra Prause) had a really good game and had some good looks, she added.
Arlington came up with a big win in the district tournament three nights earlier when they defeated Sedro-Woolley 53-36.
Arlington held the Cubs to 3 points in the first period and continued to remain comfortably ahead after putting up 20 points in the same quarter. Kyra Prause led Arlington with 16 points and three others scored eight each in the Feb. 23 win.
