Rosy outlook for Arlington girls soccer

Solid passing, plenty of depth should take Eagles far

Solid passing, plenty of depth should take Eagles far

Coach Nathan Davis likes what hes seeing on the practice fields this fall. His girls soccer team has been whipping crisp passes to each other, sending well-placed crosses, and finishing with authority around the goal. A year after missing out on state by one game the Eagles return the core group to put them over the top this season.
Up front the Eagles return two letter winners in Kristina Longorsky and Becca Wadey. Only sophomores, both played in important matches last season and have valuable experience.
Longorsky is strong with a nice first touch on the ball, said Davis. She swings her hips around quickly on turns which will give her a chance to score a lot of goals.
Wadey split time between the varsity and the JV last season. This year she will be counted on to produce on the top level.
Becca has an explosive shot, observed the coach. The ball pops off her foot when she drives it.
Two central midfielders return from last years team as well. Jessica Van Loo will be the Eagles primary distributor.
Jessica has great vision with the ball, said Davis. She anticipates plays in advance.
Teaming up in the middle with Van Loo will be Kristin Allen, who her coach believes is, the most aggressive player on the team.
She is the first into every challenge, Davis noted. Kristin wins a lot of 50/50 balls and runs all over the place.
On the touchlines, the team will return senior captain Morgan Galusha, a catalyst to last years excellent finish.
Morgan has a motor that wont stop, said her coach. She is super competitive.
On the left side will be Amanda Wreggelsworth, the natural left footer. Wregglesworth plays a tight marking brand of defense and is, tenacious for her size according to Davis.
Olivia Woodard will also make an impact from the wings. Only a sophomore, Woodard has been tabbed as a key distributor for the attack.
The center backs will be Bailee Dettmer and Samantha Coy. Dettmer will captain the team along with Galusha.
Coy will be making her first appearance for the team as a freshman, the only freshman on varsity.
She will be asked to come in and fill some big shoes, said Davis. We lost a college player in her spot.
Erin Taylor and Reggie Smithson round out the defense on the wings. Taylor is a bruiser and a tough tackler in the back. Smithson plays the cerebral game and relies on her soccer IQ to make plays.
In goal, Davis thinks he has the best keeper in the league in Andrea Parlin.
Andreas very talented athletically, he said. She played well in the playoffs last year for us and posted a couple shut outs. She has all the tools to be one of the best players in the league.
While the squad has talent, Davis insists his goal is to, improve, improve, improve.
Were in the playoffs because were a 3A school. But we want to be playing our best soccer in the last two weeks of the season. Its all about learning, building, and teaching along the way.
The team will employ a standard 4-4-2 alignment, flat at the back with two central midfielders, two wings, and two strikers.
Wed like to attack from the wings, said Davis. Were trying to get the ball on goal as much as possible and put pressure on the opposing keeper.
Davis believes his squad will finish in the top half of the league and challenge for a State berth.
In our league Everett is a very good team; we lost to them by one goal last year, said Davis. But this is a good group we have here, its the best chance weve had to qualify for state in a while.
