ARLINGTON The Arlington boys basketball team made only one field goal in the fourth period but made 15 of their 18 free throws in the final eight minutes to defeat Sedro-Woolley 66-57 at Arlington High School Feb. 24 and put an end to the Cubs season.
The Eagles ran away with a 9-0 lead in the games first two minutes thanks to sophomore guard Cole Carpenters hot first-half shooting, but Sedro-Woolley made adjustments and roared back with a trey from Cubs junior guard Ethan Brown tying it up at 11-11 near the three-minute mark and running up a 19-14 first-period lead.
Arlington changed up its defense early in the second quarter allowing the offense to tie the game back up at 22 midway through the second period with a three from sophomore forward Tyler Busby. Carpenter came up with a steal and assist to senior guard Taylor Martin, whose subsequent lay-up put Arlington back in charge.
Strong ensemble play by the Eagles kept Sedro-Woolley from ever taking back the lead despite game-high 22- and 21-point performances from Cubs seniors Kyle Fox and Josh Clayton who combined for 18 of their teams 19 second-half points. Carpenter put up a team-high 13 points for the Eagles before fouling out late in the game. Junior forward Caleb Scarth added another 13 points for Arlington, while Martin and senior center Abe Bourasaw each contributed 11. Busby and senior Andrew Disotell tallied nine points a piece.
Arlington coach Nick Brown said after the game that he was just happy to have the playoff win.
I was very happy. I thought we played hard, but I didnt think we executed the way we could have. We could have played better, Brown said. I think we need to improve our focus. Our offense, were not as sharp as we need to be at this time of the year and we need to play without fouling.
I thought Carpenter played really well. He did a good job of pushing the ball. I thought Taylor Martin did a good job of making things happen defensively, he added, saying he was also happy with play from Disotell and Scarth.
With the win, Arlington faced Meadowdale the night of Feb. 27 after The Times went to press. A loss to Meadowdale would end Arlingtons season. With a win, they will face the winner of Shorecrest vs. Everett on March 1.
