It’s only been two games and senior Kalie Basher is already losing her voice.
“I like to talk a lot,” said the Arlington first baseman. “It started to crack a little (just a day ago against Ferndale March 15) and it started going early today.”
If the Cougars looked like a team that hadn’t seen much time together on the pitch against Burlington-Edison, it’d be a fair assessment — and true.
“This is the first time we’ve been able to play on a full, grass field,” said Lakewood manager Bryce Barker after his boys lost 2-0, March 15. “We’ve been practicing on a dirt field the past couple of weeks so, with that, I think the guys played better than anybody expected going into today.”
The Eagles are in a precarious position at the start of the softball season.
Arlington caught a glimpse of what it was capable of at the 2010 District Tournament, coming just a game away from the state tournament.
As far as Arlington manager Eric Heinz is concerned, this season the Wesco North is going to be split into two groups, Lake Stevens and everybody else.
“Lake Stevens is the favorite heading in,” said Heinz. “But the rest of the league is going to be a dog fight, and I think we’re right in the middle of it.”
As a program, Cougar baseball has found a place near the top of the Cascade Conference and manager Larry Delaney sees no reason for that to change in 2011.
“Archbishop Murphy is going to return a solid team and Cedarcrest is always strong, though they did lose a lot of seniors,” he said. “I see us being right up there when it’s all said and done.”
With a number of key players returning, the Cougars softball team is ready to climb up the Cascade Conference standings in 2012.
“The talent level has definitely gone up this year,” said Cougars coach Steve Barker.
This year’s Eagles boys soccer team is saturated with experience.
As Arlington prepares for the spring season, it has 11 players on the roster who have started at least one game at the varsity level.

Any way you look at it, the Eagles have played their final game at home this season.
But the Arlington boys basketball team showed the home crowd what was possible in a 65-55 win over Kamiak in District 1 tournament action to put them within two wins of a state tournament berth.
“These guys came out and did what they needed to do to survive,” said Arlington coach Nick Brown. “Now we’ve got more work to do.”
