Realize that true happiness lies within you. Waste no time and effort searching for peace and contentment and joy in the world outside. Remember that there is no happiness in having or in getting, but only in giving. Reach out. Share. Smile. Hug. Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself.
Its natural for many of us to enter the New Year filled with hope. Theres hope that, like misdirected golf shots, a passing years errors can be filed away as water under the bridge and that our next efforts will fly true enough to buoy our spirits.

I was in a queue at Safeways Western Union counter the other day, waiting to wire some money to a friend overseas. Four people ahead of me were scanning chits through a machine on the counter. It was a Lotto scanner, and written across its front was this message: Its good to play Lotto.

Tighter Focus
Most of us have already voted by now but some readers have asked my opinions anyway, even if only out of curiosity, so I shall oblige as I do in most elections.
My, how times stay the same. I wrote the column below in the Dec. 16, 1998 Marysville Globe and Arlington Times. We now have different mayors, different City Councils, and the proposal for a college is revised to embrace a four-year, possibly residential, probably science-math-engineering-technology college. What is also different is that local folks are psyched about hosting what could become a world class Washington version of MIT.
