Arlington, Marysville CT drivers win honors

Two local residents were recently honored for driving millions of miles for Community Transit.

Shelly Schweigert of Arlington was honored for reaching two million miles of safe driving. Driving two million miles is the equivalent of riding a bicycle around the world 80 times.

For Schweigert, nearly 27 years of safe driving is all about “safety, service and schedule.” She drives the Swift Green Line.

“Green Line riders are great; they are excited about a new way to get to where they are going,” Schweigert said. Community Transit has eight drivers at this status.

Amarjit Manhas of Marysville won an award for obtaining the level of a million miles of safe driving.

A million miles of driving is the equivalent of running more than 38,000 marathons.

He joined 50-plus drivers at CT who have accomplished this feat.

Manhas expressed pride in the accomplishment.

With nearly 20 years of safe driving under his belt, he had some advice for new drivers.

“Be safe, have patience, and wear a smile.” His favorite route is 201, traveling from Smokey Point to Lynnwood. “It makes me happy to drive in my own community,” Manhas said.

Million Mile Drivers are presented a jacket, plaque, certificate and pin, as well as having their name placed on one of the agency’s buses.

Don Smith of Everett was honored at the same time.

CT CEO Emmett Heath added, “The Million Mile Awards are among the most significant accomplishments we recognize because it represents your safe driving skills.” CT is responsible for providing bus and paratransit service, vanpool and alternative commute options in Snohomish County. The agency is building a network of Swift bus rapid transit lines with Swift Blue Line along Highway 99 and the Swift Green Line between Canyon Park/Bothell and Boeing/Paine Field.
