ARLINGTON — To commemorate Arbor Day this year, the city of Arlington plans to install a rain garden at Legion Park, with help from the Snohomish Conservation District, and they’re inviting the public to join the planting and learn more about rain gardens.

On Saturday, April 14, the Arlington City Council Chambers at 238 N. Olympic Ave. will serve as the site for a rain garden workshop from 10-10:45 a.m., during which attendees will be given insights on the benefits of installing rain gardens in their own yards, as well as tips on how to get started on their designs.

The Centennial Trail rain garden installation will follow at 11 a.m. by the new restroom and visitor information facility in Legion Park at 114 N. Olympic Ave., just south of Arlington City Hall and the Council Chambers. This rain garden is intended to allow otherwise potentially problematic runoff from the new building’s roof and walkways along Centennial Trail to soak into the ground, where it will be filtered by the soil and plants.

Volunteers of all ages are needed to help plant and mulch, and are asked to bring their own gloves and hand tools for gardening. Refreshments will be provided.

Arlington will receive its 10th annual Arbor Day Tree City Award from a representative of the Department of Natural Resources at 11 a.m. at the planting location.
