Marysville noon Rotary names Community Service student of the month

MARYSVILLE – Cristina Velasco has been named Community Service Student of the Month by the Marysville noon Rotary.

She has volunteered about 250 hours the past year, and 635 hours the past three years. She has twice received a varsity letter and Presidential Award for Community Service.

Much of her volunteering comes through the Navy Junior ROTC program at school, her church as an alter server and other duties, and through the Marysville Kiwanis Key Club at Marysville Getchell High School.

She is the acting lieutenant governor for five Key Clubs this year, after serving as president last year and editor the previous year. She has helped with beach cleanups and with making cards for Seattle’s Children’s Hospital through the Kiwanis Children’s Cancer Program. She has also volunteered at the Fishing Derby, Movies in the Park, and much more.

She also has volunteered with the Marysville Food Bank, Marysville Library, YMCA, Sno-Isle Service Center, Eagle Wings Ministry, Rotary Auction, Chamber of Commerce and at Camp Patterson, a summer camp in Everett for those with disabilities. She is also treasurer for the “S” which stands for “Service” Club.

Rotary president Jon Nehring and member Daryn Bundy presented her with the certificate Tuesday. She also received $100 from Les Schwab.
