ARLINGTON — Students from Arlington Christian School recently took a field trip to the Stillaguamish River.

On Oct. 8, students in Hugh Galbraith’s English class floated the river for part of a project in which they mapped the Stillaguamish River basin, drew and discussed the river’s five types of salmon, wrote an intensive report on the history of the river and gave an oral report in class.

“The trip incorporated writing skills,” said Tina O’Keefe, director of Arlington Christian School. “Each student wrote a complete journal about the trip, rocks were collected (and) soil samples and driftwood were used to do creative writing at home.”

Students launched at Haller Park and landed at Island Crossing during the trip.

Dave Buttons from Pacific Northwest Float trips directed the drift boat excursion.

Eighth-grader Alex O’Keefe said the group of students got to see birds and other wildlife, including pink salmon spawning.

“I had never been on the river before,” said O’Keefe, 14. “It was a great learning experience.”
