The band plays on – even at a carnival in Marysville (slide show)

MARYSVILLE – It’s not the kind of place you usually see a concert band.

So visitors to the Marysville-Tulalip Chamber of Commerce Carnival Thursday night often looked perplexed.

While only a dozen or so people sat and watched the entire 1 1/2 hour performance of the Marysville City Band, dozens more stopped and listened to a song or two on the way to the rides.

Carnival workers could be seen watching and listening throughout the concert, certainly a nice break from the regular midway noise.

For those in the band, the noise wasn’t quite as bad as they thought it might be. Except for the Ring of Fire and occasional “ding” from the muscle-hammer game, the performers were able to hear each other fairly well.

It was a little dusty and a little windy, but Bruce Norris, president of the nonprofit, said all in all it was a good dress rehearsal for their Spring Concert Friday night at 7 at the Marysville Museum on Armar Road.

The community band made up of performances of all ages and abilities, is under the direction of Steven Utt. He invited anyone interested to join the band.

At the carnival performance, the band performed “The Liberty Bell,” by John Philip Souza, along with “Autumn in New York,” an Irish tune and a Japanese folk song.

The all-volunteer nonprofit plays for free, but donations are accepted to help them buy music.

The chamber carnival continues through Sunday at the field in Tulalip between Home Depot and Cabela’s.
