ARLINGTON – The best is the last for Jane Joselow.
The retired teacher has been coaching Arlington High School’s Hi-Q team for 24 years, along with Ben Mendro.
She was “hungry for the win” at the state championships March 17 because this season is her last.
Her team filled her up with happiness, claiming the state crown over three-time defending champion Archbishop Murphy and the Monroe Bearcats. The Wildcats beat the other two teams last year.
“I’m floating on air,” Joselow said. “I wanted so badly to see what nationals were like.”
That wish will come true, too, as the Eagles will participate at nationals April 16. That online competition will be against teams from Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Alabama.
Students prepared for state by studying to answer questions in 13 subjects, including literature, sports, history, current events, government, Shakespeare, geometry and physics.
Senior Eagle team member Felix Neeleman and junior Hannah Martian were proud of their efforts.
“We just come prepared,” said Hannah, a two-year Hi-Q veteran. “Everybody works really hard.”
Felix said she looked forward to recognition at Arlington when the team brought home the trophy.
“It’s definitely not as widely followed as sports, but people definitely know we’re here,” she said.
Other members of the state championship team are: Nick Mendro, Quinn James, James Piscioneri, Dakota Brenner and K.J. Mullin.
