ARLINGTON — An Arlington High School senior, Christie Stensland, 17, along with the help of fellow DECA and Honor Society members hosted a 5K run and walk June 6 to help cure cancer. “Curing Cancer – One Step At A Time” was a benefit for Providence Regional Cancer Partnership.

More than 50 people participated in the event and $1,500 was raised.

Stensland ran in a benefit 5K run more that a year ago and she was so inspired that she decided that she wanted to do something more to help in the fight against cancer.

Stensland chose to work with the Providence Regional Cancer Partnership in Everett. The Cancer Partnership is a collaborative venture between four leading medical groups — Providence Everett Medical Center, The Everett Clinic, Western Washington Medical Group and Northwest Washington Radiation Oncology Associates. The Cancer Partnership offers all aspects of outpatient cancer care under one roof including chemotherapy, radiation oncology, clinical research, integrative medicine and counseling services.

In the past few months, Stensland juggled a busy schedule including school, work and senior year activities while she took on the task of figuring out all of the details involved in hosting a fun run — everything from gathering the proper permits and determining the 5K route, to advertising and obtaining donations of water, oranges and T-shirts.

“It is truly inspiring to see young people take on important work like this,” said a volunteer at the fun run.

“Christie’s determination and hard work are commendable.”

The volunteer added that she was proud of the other AHS students who joined in the effort to make the idea a reality.
