Arlington and Lakewood winter sports teams ready themselves for the season.

ARLINGTON — The Arlington boys wrestling team placed sixth overall in state last season, and they are bringing back everyone from that group.

“We hope this outstanding group of wrestlers can take us to the top of the mountain this year,” assistant coach Ben Mendro said.

The boys and girls teams will return these state and regional competitors:

Senior Trey Swanson placed fourth at 106 pounds; senior Danny Herrera participated at 113; sophomore Will Rush was a state alternate at 120; sophomore Gavin Rork fourth at 126 pounds; senior Jeremy Nygard fifth at 126; third in 2014 at 4A 106; (senior Boston Jones competed in regionals at 132); senior Parker Spady competed in regionals and will likely return to either 145 or 138; junior Cooper McAuslan was fifth at 145; junior Riley Oakes competed in regionals at 152; senior Azariah Crew fourth at state at 106; Ruben Crew second at 160; and junior Junior Colton Ferro a state participant.

Returning for the girls are seniors Robin Hernandez, who won a match at state, and Rachel Sherson, who was an alternate to state.

ARLINGTON — The three-time defending Wesco 3A North Arlington girls basketball team returns nine seniors with state-level experience.

One of those is senior Jayla Russ, starting her fourth year in the starting lineup who was All-Wesco North last season.

Another is senior Gracie Castaneda, a 3-year starter.

Senior Emma Janousek is also starting her fourth year as varsity. She will be the leader of the defense, coach Joe Marsh said.

Other contributors will be seniors Sarah Shortt, Sevi Biesler and Serafina Balderas.

“We are looking forward to another great season,” Marsh said. “One benefiting this senior group and building on the success we’ve had the last few years. We hope to contend for league district championships and move on from there.”

LAKEWOOD — The Lakewood boys basketball team returns some players but senior Matthew Keen is the one to talk about, coach Anthony Wiederkehr said.

“He’s our only three-year varsity player, and he is stepping into a much different role as our leader this year,” he said. “It should be a challenging adjustment for him, but he has matured and made improvements to his game this off-season and I have one-hundred percent confidence that he is ready to step into a leadership role on our team.”

The Cougars went 11-9 last year and just missed their 2A district playoff berth by a game.

“Obviously Kings is going to be tough after winning a state 1A championship,” he said. “Archbishop Murphy should be tough again too.”

The goal this year is to make playoffs, Wiederkehr said.

“Our main goal is to build on last year and take another step forward,” Wiederkehr said. “If we do that, playoffs will follow.”

LAKEWOOD — The Lakewood girls basketball team returns nine varsity players, two of whom are leading scorers, Marissa Blair and Haley Senyitko. Coach Chris Walster expects both to make all-conference again.

“Marissa is in the running as one of the league MVP candidates,” Walster said.

But the Cougars also have some newcomers. Sophomore Bailey Dixon “could be a quality defensive addition as well as a rebounding presence,” standing 5-foot-10, Walster said.

The team also returns sophomores Jelly Perry and Emily Senyitko, who are projected to make all-league honors as well, Walster said.

Lakewood finished second in the 2A Cascade Conference and third overall last seasons, but Walster said this year the Cougars could make a state run.

“This year, the team looks to be the first in the history of Lakewood to make it through to regionals and then to the state tournament,” Walster said.

ARLINGTON — The Arlington boys basketball team returns leadership after losing some to graduation and injuries.

“They’re very good kids, hard workers,” coach Nick Brown said. “We’re trying to get better every day and make it back to playoffs.”

The returners include captain Drew Bryson as a junior, who started as a sophomore and has been on varsity since his freshman year.

Also senior starter Donovan Sellgren returns as captain.

The team starts a lot of seniors but are “young with experience,” Brown said.

Some newcomers include junior Sam Tregoning, described as a good shooter from the junior-varsity squad.
