Arlington dominates Meadowdale 65-24 (slide show)

ARLINGTON — To “spread the wealth around” was part of Arlington’s plan to get back into the season of basketball, coach Joe Marsh said.

The Arlington girls basketball players showcased that in their season-opener win with a dominant performance over Meadowdale 65-24 Dec. 1.

“This is a team that has to win by getting multiple points from different players,” Marsh said. “I have ten or eleven different players I can play, and that’s how I want to do it.”

With the missing post presence of the graduated 6-foot-1 Lyndsay Leatherman, who was a big scorer, the Eagles did what Marsh wanted — getting scores from 10 players.

But for a team that only has one senior, it was the “junior-heavy” roster that stole the show.

“That pays off over the course of the years,” Marsh said. “These kids know what to do, and now we can just come in and get better and better.”

Juniors Jayla Russ and Sevi Biesler scored 11 points apiece.

“Coach said, ‘score, get everyone in, and out work ’em,’ so that’s what we did,” Biesler said.

Biesler was the sharpshooter of the two, combining for three 3-point goals.

“I feel like it was the beginning of the setting on where we need to be,” Biesler said. “We’re all trying to figure out what we should be doing and where we should be on the court.”

There were a couple of missed passes here and there, and some missed shots, but it was an overall good start for Arlington, Marsh said.

“Our defense and energy was fantastic and that’s the way we wanted to start our season,” Marsh said. “I think we did a great job of playing the game at a high speed.”
