Arlington, M-P and Lakewood seeded in playoffs (slide show)

Football crunch time season starts now as the state playoffs begin.

MARYSVILLE — Marysville-Pilchuck hosts Seattle Prep in its first district playoff football game Friday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.

The Tomahawks will battle a team that edged its way via a comeback against Cleveland 25-24 last week.

It was Seattle Prep’s sophomore running back Jesse Franklin who rushed 21 yards for a touchdown and a 2-point conversion with 1:58 left in the game to clinch the No. 9 Metro seed.

Last week, M-P defeated Meadowdale 55-34.

With the score 14-13, the Tomahawks advanced their lead by scoring three touchdowns in 41 seconds in the waning minutes of the second half, starting with a pick 6 by senior defensive back Darrion Young.

M-P never looked back and won 55-34, advancing as the No. 1 seed in the district playoffs.

ARLINGTON — Arlington gets a second crack at 8-1 Eastside Catholic in the 3A District playoffs football game Friday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.

The Eagles were blown away by the Crusaders 48-7 in a non-league game Sept. 12.

Arlington coach Greg Dailer said he is examining what Eastside Catholic did in its last encounter and what they are doing now.

The Crusaders’ quarterback, junior Harley Kirsch, completed five touchdown passes out of his nine completions, but offensive blunders also contibuted to the Eagles’ blowout.

“We just need to cover a little better and pressure the quarterback,” Dailer said. “We need to maintain the ball better.”

Some of those problems were exposed in Arlington’s recent game against Glacier Peak Nov. 1. Protecting the quarterback and offensive blunders were part of what led Arlington to a 27-6 loss.

“We didn’t execute well on offense at all,” Dailer said.

MARYSVILLE — Marysville Getchell will wrap up its season in a non-conference game against 0-9 Inglemoor Thursday, Nov. 6, at 6 p.m.

Though a young and winless team, MG coach Davis Lura still expects a tough contest.

“They’re in the toughest league in the state,” Lura said. “They played very good teams.”

MG topped Lynnwood last week 48-27.

“We got to play for pride,” Lura said. “When we finish this year it will be like any other year we had.”

The centerpiece for MG’s offense this year was sophomore running back Collin Montez, who leads the league in rushing.

Lura guessed that Montez has rushed for around 1,900 yards entering his final game.

“He’s a humble, soft-spoken kid,” Lura said. “He just wants to win.”

On Oct. 31, Montez rushed for 274 yards and scored five of the Chargers’ seven touchdowns.

“The attitude this year was ‘we’re never going to quit.’ No matter what, our kids always play hard,” Lura said.

LAKEWOOD — Lakewood will play its first round of the 2A Cascade Conference playoffs against 6-3 Burlington Edison Friday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m at Arlington High School.

“Burlington is going to be a very tough opponent,” Lakewood coach Dan Teeter said.

Teeter anticipates Burlington to use its 3-4 defensive scheme to blitz and use its secondary to intercept errant throws.

But Lakewood’s mobile senior quarterback, Blake Watts, can avoid tackles and takes his snaps from the gun, Teeter said.

In his last game, Watts completed seven out of nine passes and scored a rushing touchdown to lead Lakewood to a 47-6 win over Granite Falls.
