ARLINGTON The girls of Brownie Troop 502 wish to thank all those who stopped by the Arlington Haggen Food and Pharmacy Nov. 12 and gave them an unprecedented haul of contributions for the local food bank.
According to Troop Leader Ann Gardiner, the girls furnished shoppers with lists of the items that the food bank needed most, and within two hours, theyd filled four carts with non-perishable and canned goods as well as personal care supplies, collecting 410 pounds of food and other items in the process.
While Gardiners daughter, Ellie admitted that some said no, and some said yes to the donation requests made by herself and her fellow Brownies, Gardiner believes that the experience as a whole provided a good lesson to the girls, especially where the extreme and surprising generosity of the community was concerned.
We had people come out of the store carrying five shopping bags, and giving us four of the five for the food bank, Gardiner said. A lot of them bought items, such as baby formula, that are really expensive.
The success of such an impromptu event has inspired Gardiner to consider a similar collection drive for Easter, but in the meantime, shed glad that her girls met their goal of filling four shopping carts and she praised the community for helping the Brownies to see that its exciting to give to others.
