That full page of legalese in the Arlington Times last week can be boiled down to a couple paragraphs in plain English.

The county announced a public hearing will begin April 30 to review proposed changes in its comprehensive plan.

The amendments that impact residents in the Arlington area include four ordinances. Three of them have to do with gravel resources.

• Ordinance no. 08-045 was brought to the county by Hillis and Smokey Point Concrete. They hope to add 44.04 acres to the county’s “Mineral Resources Overlay” or the area zoned for mining mineral resources, i.e. sand and gravel. The proposed rezone is located three-quarters of a mile from SR 530, north of Grant Creek Road, in Cicero, eight miles east of Arlington. It also proposes changing the zoning of 34.13 acres from A-10, i.e. agriculture use with a minimum lot size of ten acres, to forestry.

• Ordinance No. 08-043 features a proposal brought to the county by Stillaguamish Resources LLC and Miller Shingle, suggesting the county add 48.21 acres to a mineral resource zone located at milepost 21.42 on SR 9.

• Ordinance No. 08-040 is proposed by Halverson Family L. Partnership to remove 30.09 acres from the Mineral Resources Overlay. This property is located at 14011 Jordan Road, near Trangen Road.

• For Ordinance No. 08-041, JLS Development wants to remove the MRO overlay from 5.7 acres located less than a mile southeast of SR 530 at Jim Creek Road. The mineral resource overlaps two existing parcels.

According to the legalese, all the proposals bring the zoning to “more closely meet the goals, objects and polices of the county’s General Policy Plan” as it currently exists.

The public hearing to take input on these issues starts at 6:30 p.m. in the first floor public meeting room at the Robert J. Drewel Building, County Admininstration Building East, at 3000 Rockefeller in Everett.
