Father-daughter dance carries on everlasting Valentine’s tradition

MARYSVILLE – Dads and their little princesses danced the night away the past two Saturdays during the Father-Daughter Valentine’s Dance hosted by the Marysville Parks, Culture and Recreation Department.

The annual tradition, now in its 15th year, is a perennial sellout as the Cedarcrest Middle School cafeteria is transformed into a dance club replete with dazzling lights and catchy music with heavy beats, music, Dads and daughters donning their finest threads and prom-worthy dresses made it a night to remember, with plenty of dancing, having fun and making memories.

DJs from Seattle Sound Source kept the night lively, playing songs ranging from participation songs like “The Chicken Dance,” “YMCA” and the BeeGees’ “Stayin’ Alive” to the modern pop hits on young girls’ digital playlists.

Attendees left with a 5 x 7 photo from to remember the night.

Cookies, punch and water served by the Marysville Kiwanis Club.

Andrea Kingsford, recreation coordinator with the parks department, said nothing is more touching than seeing daughters return who were half the size when she first met them, hearing about what they’ve been up to in their lives, and seeing the fathers who couldn’t be prouder. Some are full-grown now who enjoy attending or helping out at the event just to remember the experience.

For a little family balance, the parks department hasn’t overlooked moms and their boys.

The Mother-Son Superhero Dance is set for Saturday, March 14 at Cedarcrest Middle School. Two sessions are available for 5-6:30 p.m. and 7-8:30 p.m. Cost is $25 per couple and $5 for each additional son attending the same session. For registration information visit www.marysvillewa.gov or call the parks department at 360-363-8400.
