ARLINGTON — The Arlington football team intends to defend the 3A Wesco North title, but first they’ll have to rebuild after losing 25 seniors.

Coach Greg Dailer is “looking at a lot of young guys” to step up, especially in the receiving department. He is expecting a lot out of junior wide receiver Trevor Kazen.

There is still remaining senior leadership, such as running back Devon Nutter, who will need to run the ball a little more to assist new junior quarterback Hudson Campell, who is replacing Andrew Kalahar, who had an impressive career as an Eagle.

Despite the changes in the roster, Dailer still intends to use Arlington’s traditional spread offense to pass the ball with the exception that Nutter will have extended duties in running.

“We’re not changing our offensive scheme,” Dailer said. “We just got a bunch of new faces.”

MARYSVILLE — After losing quarterback Erik Lind and running back Ray Pimentel, Marysville-Pilchuck’s football team has some big holes to fill on offense.

Junior Kee-an Ballard will likely take the reigns as quarterback, but coach Brandon Carson is also looking for big things from four seniors — running backs KeShaun King and Galdino Fajardo, offensive lineman Ross Whyte and middle linebacker Tim Barton.

“Those are four seniors that have done a good job for us so far this fall,” Carson said.

Though there is promise on M-P’s offense, Carson is most excited for the defense. With defensive backs like senior Keith Pablo returning, it’s understandable.

“I’m a defensive guy – I love the defense, and I’m really passionate about that,” Carson said. “I’m hoping we can improve upon what we did last year.”

With tough competition in the 3A North like Ferndale and defending district champion Arlington to be considered, Carson is more focused on rebuilding the team.

“Right now we’re just worried about us blocking, tackling, and we’ll worry about other stuff as we go along,” Carson said.

MARYSVILLE — The Marysville Getchell football team will still be “senior heavy” in the right places.

“I think we have lot of returning seniors who all had a lot of playing time last year,” coach Davis Lura said. “So we have a lot of experience in the skill positions.”

Though an “offensive guy,” he’s especially excited about the Chargers’ defense.

“I think we have pretty much the whole team returning on that side of the ball,” Lura said, such as defensive back Kyle Pinca and linebacker Michael Stewart, both seniors.

Along with winning the league title, Lura wants his team “to be competitive in every game and stay healthy,” he said.

LAKEWOOD — With a new league and field, there is plenty for the Lakewood football team to look forward to.

But they will also put out a team with potential on both sides of the ball, coach Dan Teeter said.

Returning talents include junior John Cox, who will have roles as a wide receiver and outside linebacker, and additionally seniors Matt Ramirez and Jacob Stenberg competing for a spot at running back.

But most notably of the returners is junior Austin Lane at quarterback.

“He did a great job for us last year,” Teeter said. “He’s put a lot of work into the offseason with a quarterback trainers so we’re really confident with what he brings to the table.”

Teeter said Lakewood is going to grind it out in the new 2A Northwest Conference, which will have perennial tough teams, including Lynden and Sedro-Woolley.

“The competition in the new conference is first-rate,” Teeter said. “Every four years that conference puts a team in the state playoffs.”
