ARLINGTON Seniors enjoyed a luau with their friends and families at the Olympic Place Retirement and Assisted Living Community Sept. 20.
Olympic Place Assistant Administrator Todd Margeson explained that the community offers festive get-togethers on the third Thursday of every month, while Olympic Place Administrator Ginnie Reed elaborated that this year marked their first end-of-summer-themed event.
We just thought it would be a really great way to kick off the change of seasons on a positive note, said Reed, while volunteers in grass skirts and coconut tops handed out leis to those who walked through their doors.
While hula dancers swayed to the beat of tropical music, in between inflatable palm trees, members of Boy Scouts of America Troop 92 were on hand to dish out plates of salmon, chicken and rice, with pineapples and mangos.
We love serving the community and the retirement community gives us a great opportunity to do so, said Rene White, scoutmaster of Troop 92. The elderly folks love to see our guys here.
Goldie Graham was joined by her daughter, Alyce Matson, and her adult granddaughter, Joyce Burt. Matson described the luau and the communitys other festive monthly events as nice family nights. Its good to be able to get together.
Normally, we serve our meals like a restaurant, but these events are buffets, Reed said, before pointing to a few Hawaiian shirts in the crowd. As you can see, several of our seniors dress for the occasion. Even though we dont publicize these events, visitors are always welcome.
