Dollars for scholars applications due March 27

Arlington School District graduating seniors are encouraged to apply for more than 30 scholarships distributed through Dollars for Scholars. The applications are available on line at arlingtondfs.org. Deadline for mailing the application is March 27. Mail to Arlington Dollars for Scholars, PO Box 43, Arlington, WA 98223. Volunteers needed for library, PARC boards

The city of Arlington is looking for two volunteers to fill vacant spots on its library board and its Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission.

Library board candidates must be active library users who live within the boundaries of the Arlington School District 16, which are essentially the boundaries of the library service area. Library board terms are five years.

The Parks, Arts & Recreation Commission is open to residents inside the city’s Urban Growth Boundary and commission terms are four years.

Applications are available on the city’s Web site at www.ci.arlington.wa.us (click on citizen government) or pick one up at City Hall, 238 N. Olympic Avenue, in downtown Arlington.

Hotline for illegal discharges, spills

The city of Arlington’s storm water department has established a 24-hour hotline for reporting illegal discharges and spills, in accordance with its Department of Ecology Phase II stormwater permit, said Ken Clarke, the city’s stormwater technician. The hotline is for reporting releases or spills such as paint, small fuel or oil spills, illegal dumping or especially muddy water being discharged into the city’s stormwater system and other non-emergency situations. Calls to the 24-hour hotline, 360-403-4600, will be responded to during working hours only. Emergencies must be reported at 9-1-1.

Deadline to report flood damage extended to March 31

Flood victims are encouraged to visit the new Disaster Recovery Center at the Stanwood-Camano Fairgrounds which is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday and closed on Sundays until further notice. The deadline to report flood damage has been extended to March 31, said FEMA’s Jack Heesch.

“The DRC will remain open as needed,” he said. “It all depends on the numbers.”

The DRC is in the Youth Exhibit Hall of the Community Fairground, at 6431 Pioneer Hwy.

The DRC at Evergreen State Fairgrounds closed Feb. 17.

Local Red Cross needs interpreters

American Red Cross is seeking speakers of Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Korean, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Lao, Cambodian or Arabic as well as English to assist as volunteer translator/interpreter to help present community disaster education programs and disaster relief and health and safety course instructors.
