The Stillaguamish Tribe has announced a call for proposals from public and non-profit agencies for projects that will address the negative impacts of its gaming operations in north Snohomish County.

The funds will be awarded on a competitive basis to eligible applicants with a demonstrated approach to address the impacts of gambling and related activities at the tribe’s Angels of the Wind Casino.

The tribe opened Angel of the Winds in Oct. 2004 and added an additional 44,000-square-feet in 2008, with its grand opening celebration at the end of December.

Under a gaming compact with the state, the Stillaguamish Tribe is required to reserve 2 percent of its net profits to address the negative impacts of gaming. The compact also requires that a committee be appointed to review the applications and recommend funding to the Tribal Council. The committee is comprised of representatives from the city of Arlington, Snohomish County, the Washington State Gambling Commission and the Stillaguamish Tribe. Each proposal submitted will be reviewed by the committee.

Applications can be requested from the Tribe at 360-652-7362 and they must be returned by 5 p.m., Feb. 5. No faxed or e-mailed applications will be accepted. They must be mailed to the Stillaguamish Tribe, P.O. Box 277, Arlington, WA 998223-0277.

Silvana Fair auction planning meeting

A planning meeting for the Silvana Fair auction will be held at the home of Roy Strotz at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14. For information on how to help call Strotz at 360-652-6064.

Jazz Nite features high school and middle school bands

The jazz musicians at Arlington High School, Haller Middle School and Post Middle School will show their stuff at the annual Jazz Nite concert starting at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 15 at the Byrnes Performing Arts Center, 18821 Crown Ridge Blvd. in Arlington.

Arlington’s two middle schools’ jazz bands are are the Haller Middle School’s Rhythm Thrashers, directed by Jeff Swanson, and Post Middle School’s Jazz Doctors, directed by Kipp Otterness. Following their performance, the middle school students will then have the opportunity to see the high school jazz bands play.

Arlington High School has two jazz bands. Jazz II is a volunteer jazz group that meets every Tuesday night, and On Hold is an audition-only group that meets every week morning at 7 a.m. before school. Both high school jazz bands are directed by John Grabowski.

KPE first grade featured on KVI Friday a.m.

Ruth Janasz-Bishop’s first-grade class at Kent Prairie Elementary School has been named Class of the Week in the KVI AM 570 Pledge Friday program. The class’s presentation of the Pledge of Allegiance was to be broadcast on KVI at 11 a.m. Dec. 19. The class was nominated by parent/volunteer Katherine Baugh by submitting to KVI an audio of the class reciting The Pledge of Allegiance.

KVI’s Kirby & Company will announce this week’s winners and play the audio during their morning show at 7:30 a.m. and KVI will make a visit to the Kent Prairie Elementary School in Arlington, too.

Each student received a goody bag full of prizes from New York Cupcakes, Bartell Drugs, All the Kings Flags, and AM 570 KVI!

The school will receive a plaque from Trophies2Go.com and a framed copy of The Pledge of Allegiance from Museum Quality Framing.

“Pledge Friday Class of the Week” is a twelve-week program that enables the Northwest community to recognize the schools, teachers and classes who know the importance of teaching their children the heritage of the United States and the significance of liberty and justice for all by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

North County Fire Fire/EMS reports 2,289 calls in 2008

For the month of December, North County Fire / EMS reported 292 calls, four structure fires, 30 fire responses, 65 motor vehicle accidents, 143 medical calls, 22 services calls, two ice rescue and 26 hazardous responses for a total of 2289 calls for the year 2008.
