Officials relocate to Olympia, continue search for missing pilot

Authorities are continuing their search Tuesday, Oct. 13, for a missing pilot and his two-seat airplane last seen taking off from a Snohomish airport Saturday.

ARLINGTON — Search and rescue teams have moved to the Olympia Airport after learning that a missing pilot may have landed his two-seat airplane in Westport.

Gordon Last, 51, of Lake Roesiger, has been missing since Saturday, Oct. 10, after departing from Harvey Field Airport in Snohomish.

Searchers are focusing their efforts between Shelton and Westport — approximately 1,900 square miles of terrain, covering Grays Harbor, Thurston and Lewis counties, said Nisha Marvel, WSDOT Aviation Communications.

Searchers have received tips from witnesses and a radar forensics team suggesting Last may have landed in Westport and departed to the northeast between 3-5 p.m. on Oct. 10.

Last was expected to return to the Snohomish air field on the afternoon of Oct. 10. The pilot’s girlfriend reported him missing when he failed to return, and air and ground units had been searching Snohomish County since he was reported missing.

Authorities conducted a ground search Saturday evening, and utilized eight search planes and a Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office helicopter during an air search Sunday, Oct. 11.

The air search continued Monday and Tuesday, Marvel said. Eight search planes had been flying over Snohomish County since Sunday looking for the missing plane.

The aircraft did not have an emergency locator or transponder on board and no flight plan was filed.

Responders from the Washington Air Search and Rescue, the Civil Air Patrol and WSDOT Aviation are were using the Arlington airport as their search headquarters, but have moved to Olympia to continue their search, Marvel said.

Anyone who may have information on Last’s airplane are encouraged to contact the search staff at missingaircraft@wsdot.wa.gov or by calling 360-410-0461.
