ARLINGTON — Out of the Blue Aviation still has plenty of seats available for their annual Young Aviators Summer Camp, and Out of the Blue’s Cathy Mighell even hopes that there might be some “scholarships” to help prospective pilots attend the five-day camp at the Arlington Municipal Airport.

Mighell explained that a Skagit-based pilot was generous enough to fund four such “scholarships” for the July 27-31 round of the day camp, out of a total class size of 12 students. The Aug. 10-14 round of the camp also has a class size of 12, but only three of those seats have been filled so far.

“The economy’s hit everybody pretty hard,” Mighell said. “This is the fourth year we’ve done it, and it’s always been popular before. It’s still an awesome program for young people, so they can be active rather than just sitting front of the TV. With so many of these kids, they’ve come back and told us how it’s changed their lives.”

The camp is open to young people ages 12-18, and offers them hands-on and ground school instruction on aerodynamics and flight systems July 27-28 and July 30, with an aviation-related field trip July 29 and a full flight lesson in a four-seater aircraft July 31, the latter including an hour and a half of handling aircraft controls.

Each day of the day camp runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., except for the midweek field trip day, which is expected to run slightly longer. The five-day camp comes with a total price tag of $279 per student, which includes lunch and snacks for each day, as well as souvenir T-shirts.
