ARLINGTON — An Arlington High School student was recently commended for her academics.

Safa Pinkens’ combined score in the preliminary SAT was in the top 5 percent of more than 1.5 million students who took the test their junior years.

For Pinkens’ efforts, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation — a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships for students — sent her a Letter of Commendation.

Pinkens was one of only about 34,000 students receive the letter for their achievements, according to the organization’s Web site.

Students are automatically entered in the National Merit Scholarship Program when they take the PSAT.

Pinkens was not named a semifinalist in the program, but Connie LaFlam, career center specialist at Arlington High School, said the letter will help her in the future.

“Although Safa is not a semifinalist, it is a wonderful thing to have on a resume and add to her college application,” LaFlam said.
