Road work provides a straighter, safer SR 9

ARLINGTON — Crews worked all weekend and until midnight Sunday to prepare for “tying in” the new portion of State Route 9, north of Arlington, Monday morning. It was a long detour out to I-5 to points north of Arlington over the weekend.

ARLINGTON — Crews worked all weekend and until midnight Sunday to prepare for “tying in” the new portion of State Route 9, north of Arlington, Monday morning. It was a long detour out to I-5 to points north of Arlington over the weekend.

“On Monday, we opened a straight one-mile section of highway to provide drivers with a smooth, safer ride,” said assistant project engineer Janice Fahning.

Over the weekend, crews excavated the old curvy stretch of highway, flattened an embankment that separated SR 9 from the north end of the new roadway, and connected each end of the new segment with SR 9.

The section was closed from 10 p.m., Friday, June 27 to noon on Monday, June 30 from Armstrong Road to just north of Harvey Creek Road.

At noon on Monday, crews reopened the highway still alternating northbound and southbound lanes until work is complete. In addition to building a new, straight section of roadway with a new bridge over Harvey Creek, crews are also working to complete new turn lanes at the intersections of 252nd Street NE and 268th Street. NE, and to replace a culvert to improve fish passage at Kackman Creek.

This $20.7 million “nickel-funded project” is scheduled for completion in fall this year.
