SMOKEY POINT — The Arlington Police Department’s new substation is set to open to the public Sept. 2.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at 17306 Smokey Point Drive. The substation gives Arlington police a stronger presence in Smokey Point, an area where shoplifting and panhandling have become a problem, Public Safety Director Bruce Stedman said.

The substation is located in the Smokey Point Shopping Center. The Arlington City Council approved a lease on the 891-square-foot space Aug. 4.

The city is expected to pay $1,142 per month in a three-year agreement with RH Smokey Point Shopping Center Associates, LLC. The payments start Jan. 1, 2015. The city is not paying anything the first five months, from early August through December, according to the lease agreement.
