ARLINGTON Trafton Elementary fourth-grader Jennifer Kellogg won the Arlington School Districts third-annual Respect Poster Contest, and received her framed award certificate from ASD Superintendent Linda Byrnes in her classroom March 8.
Kelloggs entry was chosen from more than 150 entries. Of the 14 runners-up, most of them were third-through fifth-graders, but one was a second-grader and another was a 10th-grader. Kelloggs poster design will be framed and hung in the ASD office, and also used as the ASD Respect Programs logo, on their T-shirts, posters, letterheads and more.
Trafton Elementary Principal Dan Larson noted that Kellogg is the first Respect Poster Contest winner from his school, since the previous two contests had both been won by Pioneer Elementary students. Byrnes explained that the contest entries are judged without knowing which students or schools they come from.
Its always a surprise to us when we find out, Byrnes said. Youll also be able to see Jennifers poster design on the front page of the next school district calendar.
Kelloggs mother, Val, praised her daughter for working so hard to come up with the poster design, but Kellogg herself was more modest about her efforts.
I only worked for an hour on it, Kellogg said. At first, I thought Id just write the word Respect and color around it, but then I got the idea to put a bunch of different colors inside of it. I also used words from the Respect Team.
I want to thank you, Jennifer, and all the other students in the Respect Teams, for spending your time and being willing to commit to the responsibilities of this program, Byrnes said. Were very proud of you and hope you keep up the good work.
