Dorothy Doyle Stanton

Dorothy Doyle Stanton passed away Sept. 14, supported and surrounded by family and friends. She was born Dec. 24, 1922 to Leo and Helen Swift Doyle, Dorothy lived the first several years of her life in Perry, Iowa. Her sister and only sibling, Corrine, was born eight years later.

The family moved to Seattle in the early years of the depression, making a home with her maternal grandmother and a rotating cast of relatives in a three-story home in the Madrona district. She graduated from Garfield High School.

She met and married Raymond H. Stanton in 1942 while they were both working at Boeing. When Ray enlisted in the Army Air Force, the young bride followed her sweetheart to California and points east as he underwent training as a bomber pilot.

After World War II, the couple returned to Seattle to raise their family. Once the children were in school, Dorothy worked as a claims adjuster for three moving and storage companies. When they retired, she and Ray lived on Maui for seven years, then moved to Marysville in 1990. She was happy to make Marysville her home, serving on the Parks Advisory Board, the Library Board, and as a member and past-president of the Friends of the Library. In 2006, Dorothy and Ray were honored by Mayor Kendall for their volunteer work in the community.

Other deeply held interests were writing, gardening (Dorothy was a Master Gardener), tailoring, knitting, history and reading. From the time she was a child, no Christmas was complete without a new book.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband and two of their daughters, Barbara and baby Susan. She is survived by three children, Christine (Edward) Doyle and her son, Devin; Jacqueline (Kris) Petersen and their sons Trevor and Derek; and Kenneth (Gwen) Stanton and their daughters, Chelsea and Lacey.

A gathering of friends and family to remember Dorothy will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sept. 19 at the clubhouse of Glenwood Mobile Estates, 5900 64th Street N.E., Marysville.

Memorials may be made to Friends of the Marysville Library or the Marysville Parks Department.
