Joyce Ramona Fortner

Joyce Ramona Fortner Smith, 86, of Monroe, Wash., died July 24, 2007, at home.
She was born in Seattle, Wash., July 19, 1921, the first child of C. James Fortner and Evelyn May Forster.
Joyce graduated from Arlington High School in 1939. She married Leo C. Smith in 1940 and raised five children, living nearly all her life in Snohomish County.
Joyce was a homemaker who loved to spend time with her family, to garden, bake, knit, read and work puzzles. She was a faithful member of the Monroe Congregational Church womens quilting group, served as church treasurer for many years and baked memorable pies for the annual church rummage sales. She will be remembered for her quiet kindness, her giving nature and sweet smile.
Joyce was preceded in death by Leo, her husband of 60 years; son Roy E. Smith; and grandson Philip A. Barker.
She is survived by daughters Karen Smith Rupp, Gold Bar, Wash.; Theresa (George Richert), Kingston; sons Michael D. (Vicki), Roswell, NM and James W. (Gay), Stanwood, Wash.; four brothers; four sisters; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by many friends and neighbors who had the honor of knowing and loving her. We are comforted knowing that she is eternally sheltered in the arms of God.
A memorial service and reception is planned for Aug. 18, at 11 a.m., at the Monroe Congregational Church.
The family requests no flowers.
Gifts in Joyces memory may be made to the Monroe Congregational Church, the U.W. Medical Center or Hospice of Snohomish County.
