Shirley Mae (Hunsberger) Hendry went to be with our Lord on Oct. 21, 2006, on a beautiful fall morning after a long courageous battle with cancer.
Shirley was born in Hannaford, N.D., on Feb. 28, 1938, at the family farm. She attended a one-room schoolhouse the first eight years of her schooling and then went on to Cooperstown High School through the tenth grade. The family of seven then moved to Everett, where she graduated from Everett High School in 1955.
She married Gerald (Jerry) Hendry of Arlington, Wash., and they raised five children on their farm in the Arlington area. They raised strawberries and raspberries and many farm animals, which their children used for their FFA projects. The family farm has always been the gathering place for many holidays and birthday parties. The tradition of Shirleys home cooking and canning goods will truly be missed by all. Coffee could always be had, and any drop-ins were welcome for her fresh baked bread or cookies.
Jerry and Shirley were avid dancers and enjoyed their monthly pinochle games with their neighborhood group. Shirley was very active in the Freeborn Lutheran Church where she has served various offices. Up until her sickness, her last office was secretary of Ladies Aide. She also belonged to a womens pinochle club as well as being in the Red Hat Society. Shirley and Jerry also enjoyed many trips in their motorhome, to North Dakota and fishing trips to Loon Lake in Canada.
She leaves behind her husband, Jerry and all five children. Bill (Cherie) Hendry of Everett and their four children, Adam, Taya, Francesca and Felicia; Bob Hendry and his three children, Heather (Mike) Dunlap, Tiffany and Derek; Mark (Jeanette) Hendry and their three children, Jeremy, Brittany and Johanna (Miguel) and Shirleys first great-grandchild, McKenzie; Brian Hendry of Silvana, Wash., and his son Joel; and Donna (Todd) Carsen of Everett and their three daughters, Cayla, Lindsey and Kelsey. Shirley also leaves behind her brother, Jim Hunsberger of Marysville, Wash., Betty (Lloyd) Swanson of Stanwood, Wash., Lewis (Melody) Hunsberger of Mukilteo, Wash. and Ramona (Perry) Sorenson of Everett. She also has many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Alfred and Lottie Hunsberger, of Everett.
Funeral service were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006, at the Freeborn Lutheran Church of Stanwood, and a lunch followed. Visitation was from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 25, and 9 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Oct. 26, in the chapel of Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood.
