Sidney Wilfred Bergdahl

Sidney Wilfred Bergdahl passed quietly away and went to be with the Lord on the evening of Oct. 22, 2007.
Sid has been a life-long resident of the Marysville-Arlington, Wash., area, graduating from Arlington High in the late spring of 1943, and only leaving for short periods of time, except for his three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Bernadine Keehn Bergdahl; and his two children, Cydney Bergdahl Allison (Bob) and Mark William Bergdahl (Connie); six grandchildren in order of birth, Heidi Bergdahl Fischer, Brett Allison, Bryan Bergdahl, Rachael Allison, Shanel Bergdahl Saxton and Andrew Allison; and five great-grandchildren.
Sid was born on Nov. 14, 1925, growing up in the area known as Swede Hill outside of Arlington.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred and Alma Bergdahl, both first generation immigrants from northern Sweden; and his three sisters, Ruby, Evelyn and Nancy.
As did many members of the greatest generation, Sid entered the Navy shortly after graduating from high school. After basic training he was assigned to the Algorab, an attack cargo ship. He served in the Pacific theater, participating in numerous amphibious operations; such as Rendova Island and transporting Marines and equipment to Guadalcanal, New Caledonia and Espiritu Santo. He earned the American Area Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal with battle star.
Upon his discharge from the service, Sid became a meat cutter, working for several businesses, including his own. Sid was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying the outdoors with his friends, his son and grandsons. After his retirement he enjoyed his role in the American Legion.
Sid was a great friend, father and grandfather. He will be missed by all.
Memorial service was held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007 at Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home, Marysville.
A special thanks to Hospice of Snohomish County and to Tammy Peters.
