President Carter called it malaise and became a one-termer when Ronald Reagan promised the people the dawning of a morning in America instead, but I think its the right word for the mood of the populace today, malaise meaning a vague sense of mental or moral ill-being.

We win looking for a change in direction

We gather with family and friends on Whidbey Island each Fourth of July for a softball game and picnic. We split into teams of twenty or thirty which makes fielding hits in tall field grass almost possible. Batting rotations work alphabetically and all get their turn, from seniors to T-ball tots.

In your recent column about the world wide toilet revolution with the effort to expand the availability of public toilets, you wrote that most grocery stores did not allow customers to use their employees facilities, which was why Rep. John OBrien drafted the bill mandating public johns in new stores, writes Bill Farrell of Federal Way. I dont recall being turned down when I shopped, although, thanks to Rep. OBrien, my store has added a public facility. Why didnt the other grocers allow use of employee facilities?
