AHS wrestlers advance to regionals | SLIDESHOW

The Arlington High School wrestling team took fifth place at the Wesco 4A Sub-Regional Tournament at Snohomish High School from Feb. 1 to Feb. 2.

SNOHOMISH — The Arlington High School wrestling team took fifth place at the Wesco 4A Sub-Regional Tournament at Snohomish High School from Feb. 1 to Feb. 2.

Six Eagle wrestlers are moving on to the regional tournament on Feb. 9, with one alternate.

“We had a champion, Jake Ferro, a junior at 182 pounds,” said assistant coach Barry Knott, who himself won an award for Assistant Coach of the Year. “We had a second place wrestler, Bryce Thomas, a junior at 132 pounds. We had three wrestlers take fourth place as well.”

Freshman Jeremy Nygard took fourth place at 106 pounds, after he pinned Sidat Kanyi from Edmonds-Woodway and Anthony Carrillo from Mariner in his first two matches. He beat Gabe Baltazar of Edmonds-Woodway, 14-0, but injured his shoulder and default went to Wyatt Butler of Snohomish.

Junior Conner Gonzales placed fourth at 138 pounds, after pinning Ven Hong from Kamiak and Keenan Thomas from Lake Stevens in his first two matches. He beat Kamiak’s Tyler Frisch, 12-1, but a knee injury defaulted his final match to Lake Stevens’ Thomas.

Scotty Bardell, also a junior, took fourth place at 145 pounds. He pinned Lynnwood’s Rob Kluth in 44 seconds and beat Snohomish’s Joseph Proffit, 5-2. He beat Lake Stevens’ Jack LeBlanc in a 4-1 decision, but also had an ankle injury which defaulted his last match to Andrew Villalobos of Mariner.

Sophomore Gareth Henderson took fifth place at 195 pounds. He pinned Mahdi Shahhosseini of Lynnwood and Cascade’s David Gutierrez. He was pinned in his final match by Hector Morell Jr. of Jackson.

Ferro, Thomas, Nygard, Gonzales, Bardell and Henderson are all qualified for the Wesco 4A Regional Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 9.

“We had a couple of injuries and we finished fifth when we were hoping for third,” said Knott. “We are hoping that our seeding will favor us. Our fourth place guys will wrestle their first place wrestlers, but our fourth place finishers are strong. Scotty Bardell rolled his ankle, Jeremy Nygard hurt his shoulder and Conner [Gonzales] has a knee injury, so we are giving them rest this week to go out and do their best next week. Scotty, Conner and Bryce have all wrestled at state and they are really good wrestlers.”

Alfred Mosqueda finished in sixth place at 220 pounds and is an alternate. “If anyone ahead of him is injured or can’t wrestle, he’ll be going to regionals as well,” said Knott.

The Wesco 4A Regional Tournament is at Snohomish High School on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 10 a.m.
