ARLINGTON — The Eagles track and field team hosted the Snohomish Panthers on Thursday, April 18, and took first place in both girls and boys events, and broke two school records on top of that.

The Arlington boys team finished with a team score of 90.33, while the girls finished with a team score of 83.

Senior Dan Boyden took first place in the shot put, breaking a 40-year-old school record with a 57-foot, 2.75-inch throw.

Freshman distance runner Emma Janousek broke the school record for the 3,200-meter race with a final time of 11:33.30. The previous record was set more than 27 years ago.

“We had these two very ancient records go down, at home, and that was really great to see,” said coach Mike Shierk. “The cool thing about Dan is that he broke his own school record again on Saturday [at the Viking Classic].”

The Viking Classic was held on Saturday, April 20, at Lake Stevens High School, and the Arlington girls team took first place out of eight teams, while the boys took third out of eight.

“We did very well. The girls won it and the boys took third and we took first with our combined score,” said Shierk. “It shows massive depth for the team. This is the third year that we’ve won that meet. There’s always good competition, including teams from the Eastside, so it was good to go down there and place first.”

The Eagles will host home meets for the next three weeks, including a meet against Oak Harbor and Stanwood on Thursday, April 25.

“Stanwood and Oak Harbor are really good schools. Oak Harbor, even though they are 3A, still have a really good track program. Stanwood is a natural rivalry. It doesn’t matter where either program is at, it is natural that we are going to want to go out and beat them,” said Shierk. “The weather is going to be great, and it’s the last meet before we move on to the championships, so we are really looking forward to it.”
