Arlington, Marysville kickball teams look for an edge

Taking the extra base — after taking the extra base — and finding out exactly how much leg extension is needed to not be a bunt are some of the strategies employed by teams in the city of Marysville's kick ball league.

MARYSVILLE — Taking the extra base — after taking the extra base — and finding out exactly how much leg extension is needed to not be a bunt are some of the strategies employed by teams in the city of Marysville’s kick ball league.

But some have gone beyond the more traditional tactics with victorious results, such as the ironically named Team Green.

Easily spotted on the field by their simulated orange, road-worker style uniforms — complete with reflectors on the edges.

“Our thinking behind (the uniforms) are that we are safe at home with our safety shirts,” said team spokesman Michael Deal of Marysville.

Team Green moved to 2-0 with a 7-2 win over Das Boot, which was especially rewarding, as the team didn’t win a game all last summer.

“I think our key is to have fun,” Deal said. “When we do that, everybody kind of relaxes more and our confidence builds. But we’re really just out here and have fun.”

On an adjacent field at Marysville-Pilchuck High School, team Kick Rocks is all business.

“We take this very seriously,” said team co-captain Chris Eddy of Arlington. “We’re so serious that I don’t have a job so I can concentrate on kick ball.”

Kick Rocks, in its first year in the league, holds practice every Sunday.

“We have our own field, I don’t think many teams can say that, but it’s an advantage,” said Kick Rocks’ other co-captian and Eddy’s sister, Kealin Walker of Arlington.

Kick Rocks, made up of players from Mill Creek up through Arlington, defeated AMT Kickball 13-6 to improve to 2-0.

The league is in week two of the six week regular season schedule with the following two weeks for a single-elimination playoff.
