ARLINGTON — The Arlington Eagles boys basketball team scored another win with a 64-50 victory over the Cascade Bruins on Jan. 7.

Senior point guard Kaleb Bryson had a hot hand, collecting four three-pointers on the night.

Senior guard Bradey Brummel made a tremendous offensive and defensive effort, making steals as well as being Arlington’s highest-scoring player.

“Brummel played lights out tonight,” Arlington Head Coach Nick Brown said. “He brought it on the defensive end and he brought it on the offensive end.”

On offense, Brummel capitalized on midrange shooting and totaled 19 points. “He made a huge difference tonight,” Brown said. “He hit a lot of midrange jump shots.”

Brummel felt his shooting was a combination of his confidence and play-calling by coach Brown. When Brummel felt he was warming up, he asked Brown for the ball.

“I started to feel it,” Brummel said. “We have the chemistry to where I can tell him, ‘I am feeling it,’ and he trusts me enough to give me the ball, and go for it.”

The first quarter started with the Eagles winning the tip. The Eagles were met by defensive pressure by the Bruins.

The Eagles responded to the Bruins’ defense through fast passing and accurate shooting. Bryson made three three-pointers in the first quarter, boosting the Eagles’ lead.

The Bruins’ offense showed they had speed, and tried to play the Eagles fast.

“They’re a quick team,” Brown said. “We’d make a run on them and they would make a run right back.”

The Eagles countered the Bruins’ fast playing by keeping them outside their paint and causing steals.

“We started off playing good defense,” Brummel said.

Brummel made his first steal of night, as well as showcasing his shooting. Brummel was able to hit a three from downtown in the first quarter. The Bruins were able to score using their speed, but not enough to keep up with the Eagles. The Eagles led at the end of the first quarter, 22-10.

Bryson opened the second quarter with a three, maintaining the Eagles’ lead. The Bruins challenged the Eagles, matching their scoring with 14 points, showing they were still in the game.

“We kind of slacked off a bit,” Brummel said

The Eagles’ strong lead in the first quarter kept them in control of the first half, with the score at 36-24.

After halftime, the Eagles came back out, finding their shots with senior guard Gavin Smoke opening with a three.

“We got it together the second half,” Brummel said. “We worked the ball around and made that extra pass.”

The Eagles were able to find their shots, but so did the Bruins. The Bruins were able to match the Eagles’ score again, but the Eagles still had the lead, with the third quarter ending at 50-38.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles finally outscored Bruins, but only by two. The Eagles scored 14 to the Bruins’ 12.

Though it was another win for Arlington, Brown did see some areas for improvement. “I think they did a good job against us,” Brown said. “We didn’t do it very pretty.”

With their sixth win in a row, Brown hopes his Eagles will keep doing what they do best.

“We’ve just got to take care of business,” Brown said. “Our league is tough, so we have to bring it every night.”

Brummel also hopes the team cohesion will continue throughout the season. “I just hope our team chemistry keeps going well,” he said. “I hope we keep doing the same stuff we’ve been doing in the last couple of games.”

As of Jan. 9, Arlington’s holds a league record of 5-0.
