Arlington soccer gets big win and loss

MARYSVILLE — The Eagles got the big win they were needing in a week where they played conference frontrunners Marysville-Pilchuck and Lake Stevens.

The Eagles fell to the Tommies in a 2-1 result, March 24, but responded with a 3-1 win over the Vikings two days later.

“All in all, these kids have been playing great soccer,” said manager Mike Gudgeon after the match with M-P. “They just don’t give up and we know that we’re going to be in every match.”

Arlington took about as early of a lead as possible when Joshua Scarth hit a volley from just inside the 30-yard mark over M-P’s back line and into the back of the net about 30 seconds into the start of play.

M-P responded roughly a minute later, however, by way of Kevin Spiva’s shot from the edge of the penalty box. Spiva took John Carlson’s cross and one-timed it to the lower left corner for the equalizer.

From there, the Tomahawks held an advantage on possession for nearly the rest of the match with a few spurts of Eagles offense mixed in. Both teams had roughly a handful of scoring attempts but Marysville-Pilchuck ended up with the deciding strike from Anthony Johnson in the 70th minute.

But the Eagles didn’t go away, in fact Arlington went on the attack with nearly 10 minutes remaining in the match and had a couple of chances to score, including a break away in stoppage time by No. 8 that was broken up by Tommies keeper Ian Beegle.

The last 20 minutes of the half got physical and heated, as bragging rights and conference records were at stake even this early in the season.

“Well most of these kids play on the same club teams, so they know each other and that’s why it can get like the way it did tonight,” said Gudgeon.

Arlington’s back line was impressive in dealing with M-P’s speed. All defenders worked together in making sure there were no breakaways.

The Eagles then rebounded from that loss with a dominating effort over the defending Wesco North champion Vikings.

Senior Isaac Ladines scored first in the 25th minute as Arlington piled on the goals in the second half. Scarth headed in the first insurance goal for the Eagles in the 60th minute off of Kevin Krogmann’s corner kick. Then, in the 75th minute, Krogmann scored his own goal.

Corbin Anderson grabbed his first shutout of the season for the Eagles, who play Cascade March 30.
