ARLINGTON — The Eagles made it clear that they didn’t want another close game with the Spartans.

Scoring on a 62-yard pass on the first play of the game, Arlington went on to dominate Stanwood 29-14 and reclaim the Stilly Cup Oct. 9.

“It’s good to get the Stilly Cup back, I just wish we would have executed a little better,” said Arlington coach Greg Dailer.

When the Eagles scored, for the most part, it was by the big play. After Blake McPherson found Griffin Ginnis for a 62-yard score in the first quarter, Riley Cobb scored on a 38-yard sprint.

In all, the Eagles ran just 33 plays as both teams were stuck at midfield most of the game.

“Our defense did really well, they allowed just 200 yards,” said Dailer. “And they were out there a lot. Stanwood was really able to eat up the clock by running the ball.”

Arlington owned a 16-7 halftime lead. McPherson opened the second half with a 1-yard keeper for a touchdown and in the fourth quarter linebacker Davante Gaillard ran back a fumble 66 yards for a score.

The win keeps Arlington (5-1) undefeated in Wesco play at 3-0 with a chance to capture the Wesco North against Monroe Oct. 15.

But they will be trying to do so without a few key players. Cobb will be out for the season with a fractured ankle he suffered in the second quarter, and tight end Bo Brummel is gone for three weeks with a strained ligament in his knee.

“We’ve got to come together and find ways to fill those holes because no one guy can replace either of those two guys,” Dailer said.

Monroe will likely be a different opponent than the Eagles are accustomed to.

“They like to throw the ball and will mix it up on defense, try to get us off guard with formations,” Dailer said.
