While senior Bryan Mack qualified for state in the triple jump last season, the track standout seemed on the cusp of a great senior campaign.
Mack emerged from the two-day district meet at Shoreline a state qualifier in a team-leading four events, the maximum number of events allowed by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.
In addition to vying again in the triple jump, Mack will compete in the long jump, the boys 100-meter dash and the 4×100 relay at the state track and field meet in Pasco, May 23 and 24.
Hes hopefully a four-event placer, said Arlington coach Judd Hunter of Mack, whose 400 relay team of Marcus Dolan, Kellen Bottin and Brandon Gunter ran a new fastest time at the district meet. We set a new school record in the 4×100 relay 43.20, and it looks good to make finals at state.
Two of Macks teammates will compete against him in individual events Gunter also qualified in the boys long jump, while Dolan will run the 100 and 200.
Senior thrower Kjirsten Jensen will also return to state to defend her titles in the shot put and discus.
The multiple event showings helped carry both the Arlington boys and girls track teams to second-place finishes nine teams in the district contest. The boys team tally was a particular goal of the team, as Arlington hoped to steal the district title away from the defending state champion Everett team.
Districts went well, Hunter said. We didnt come away with the district title like we wanted to, but we had a lot of great performances.
On top of the record-breaking relay, those performances included athletes beating their personal bests as well. With a 5-1 mark in the high jump, sophomore Ginny Wilson qualified for her second state meet, after running on a state relay last season. Her mark was a three-inch improvement on her previous best, according to Hunter.
