Arlington volleyball coach: It’s only just begun

KENNEWICK — The Arlington volleyball season came to an end Saturday, but really “It’s only the beginning.”

“These seniors started something here with Arlington volleyball,” coach Whitney Williams said. “They changed the tide.”

In just three seasons coaching Arlington, the Eagles made their first state run in 20 years.

Arlington was eliminated from the 3A state tournament Nov. 12, losing its first match to Bellevue 3-2 (19-25, 20-25, 25-15, 25-18 and 15-12) and then in the consolation game to Holy Names Academy 3-2 (19-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-19 and 15-10). Arlington finished its season ranked No. 1 in the Wesco 3A North league with a 15-4 record.

“These girls gave everything they thought they were capable of in that moment,” Williams said of their state performance. “Our ability to execute the things we know was somewhat compromised, but there was no surrendering. Not one of them gave up. They kept grinding as best they could, and for that I am proud.”

Though Arlington was ousted early, the team stayed for the remainder of the tourney. It was regarded as a fond memory, especially for the seniors Williams coached since they were sophomores, she said.

“We could accept that this was not our tournament to win. However, we were going to experience it until the end, whether we were on the floor as participants or in the stands as lovers of the game,” Williams said. “That’s what it’s about you know—creating an experience that these girls will remember for their lifetime. I think that’s what we did this year.”

Arlington highlights against Bellevue: Senior outside hitter Jessica Baker led with 15 kills, and senior middle blocker Rylie Rasar added 11. Senior setter Ally Peterson led with 44 assists and 22 digs.

Arlington highlights against Holy Names Academy: Senior outside hitter Morgan VanLaar led with 19 kills, and Baker added 17.
