ARLINGTON – Not everyone is relaxing today waiting for the fireworks.

Dozens of hearty souls competed in the Pedal, Paddle, Puff Triathlon and 5K Foam Run as part of Arlington Fourth of July activities.

Two just-graduated eighth-graders from Stanwood won the Fun Run. Tony Racine dominated the race, finishing well-ahead of the pack. Lael Tenhoopen was almost as dominant in the women’s race.

Participants wore white t-shirts, which were supposed to turn red, white and blue after running through different foam stations on the course.

The triathlon started with an 8-mile bike ride, followed by a 6-mile kayak or canoe race down the Stillaguamish River, and ending with a 5-kilometer run. Some contestants team up while others do it all on their own.

The events are put on as fundraisers for the nonprofit Arlington Runners Club. It uses those funds to help groups such as the Stillaguamish Senior Center, Eagle Wings Disability Ministries and the Christmas Wish Toy Drive.
