ARLINGTON — Haller Middle School’s grandstands were filled with spectators on Saturday, July 13, as the Eagle Mamas battled to a 14-0 victory over the Stanwood-Camano moms to claim the Stilly Puff Cup in the annual Powder Puff football game fundraiser.

“This is our third year winning the Stilly Puff Cup,” said Kari Cook, event organizer and Eagle Mama. “It’s always awesome, especially playing from your hometown. You want to win for your town and we had a huge crowd there. It’s always nice to give them a win.”

The Powder Puff football game is played between mothers of Arlington youth football players and Stanwood-Camano youth football players to raise funds for each football association. Arlington Youth Football Association allocates the money from the game for scholarships for players who can not afford registration fees. The funds have not yet been calculated, but Cook expects the amount to be equal to or greater than those in previous years.

“I know from talking to everybody that we were as busy as last year, if not busier,” said Cook

Arlington hosted a carnival style pre-party for children, and funds raised from that event also go to youth football scholarships.

“We had a great day,” said Cook. “We had a good crowd during the day and the concession stand was constantly busy, our stands were packed, we had a huge crowd. It’s fun to see that when you’re on the field.”

Being able to completely shutout Stanwood’s moms was an extra bonus for the Powder Puff players, whose goal is to help out their community.

“It’s a little icing on the cake,” said Cook. “I play offense and defense, and as defense being able to shut them out is a great feeling.”

In addition to concessions, tickets and carnival sales, the game also featured a silent auction and raffle.

“I think this game has been our best game. It was so exciting,” said Cook. “We had more fans, more cheerleaders, and Stanwood brought more cheerleaders, which was nice to see. To see it grow is a great experience, especially knowing that the community is still excited about it after so many years. It’s a great feeling to see people still having fun.”

Although the total fundraising amount is being tallied, the players are thankful for the attendance and for those who came to support the kids.

“In the end it is all for a great cause,” said Cook. “And, of course, I love playing football.”
