Girls soccer
The Marysville Getchell girls soccer team beat Meadowdale at home Tuesday 2-0 to stay in the hunt for a district playoff berth.
The teams were scoreless at the half, as MG’s defense got back well, stopped a goal try on a penalty kick with its wall and junior goalie Kaitlynn Knocke made some saves.
The play of the half, if not the game, came when a Maverick shot ricocheted off the top bar, and Knocke went to retrieve it. Meadowdale beat her to the ball and got off a one-touch shot. But sophomore defender Madeline Granbois slid in and kicked it out for the save.
“We practice backing up the goalie all year,” Coach Kyle Suits said.
MG just missed a goal on a trick play off a corner kick. Suits told Veronika Taylor to let Oshinaye Taylor take the kick instead. Veronika actually tapped the ball in play, so Oshinaye was able to dribble the ball in uncontested and get off a shot. But it missed, as did a rebound try, and the half ended 0-0.
At halftime, players talked about them doing a good job of battling for every possession. They also pointed out Grandbois’ play.
“We need that same intensity all over the field,” player Kortney Crane said.
Suit pointed out that the forwards needed to force Meadowdale’s goalie to make plays. They were making it too easy for her by missing their shots left and right of the goal.
“It’s the moment of concentration,” he said. “When you have a shot you need to dial it in.”
The Chargers did just that in the second half, scoring two goals.
The first came with 25 minutes left in the game, after a long approach shot from midfield. The two teams kicked the ball around, fighting for control, when senior midfielder Hannah Jones broke free and was one-on-one against the goalie. MG scored later to make the final tally 2-0.
In other soccer games Tuesday, Mackensie Connelly, a sophomore forward, scored two goals and added an assist as Marysville-Pilchuck blanked Everett 3-0. Arlington fell to Mountlake Terrace 4-0.
Earlier in the week, Arlington and MG tied 0-0, while M-P won 3-1 over Shorewood. Lakewood beat Burlington-Edison 3-2.
Girls volleyball
In volleyball, Arlington fell to Stanwood Tuesday 3-0 to fall to second place in North Wesco with a 9-1 record, 10-2 overall. The game scores were 25-19, 25-22 and 25-22. Sophomore outside hitter Arianna Bilby led the Eagles with seven kills, seven digs and two aces. Sophomore setter Caroline Diemer had nine assists and senior libero Michaela Camblin had four digs.
Also Tuesday, MG lost to Everett 3-1, M-P fell to Mountlake Terrace 3-1, and Lynden blanked Lakewood 2-0.
Earlier in the week, Arlington beat M-P Oct. 12 25-17, 25-11 and 25-18.
Bilby led the way with six kills, three aces and a block. Reese Talbot added five kills and an ace. Defensively, Madelin Frolich came up with 10 digs.
Also, MG lost to Stanwood 3-0, and Lakewood lost to Burlington-Edison 3-0.
Football
In football, Northwest 2A League-leading Lakewood had a surprisingly tough time with last place Blaine, winning at home 32-30. Blaine fell to 0-7, while the Lakewood Cougars are now 7-1, 4-0 in conference play.
In local 3A play, Arlington also had a surprisingly tough time against Stanwood, only winning thanks to lineman Michael VanBeek blocking a field goal in the closing seconds as the Eagles hung on to edge the home team 28-27. The Eagles improved to 5-2, while Stanwood dropped to 2-5.
Arlington trailed 21-14 with six minutes to play when quarterback Anthony Whitis hit Campbell Hudson for a 65-yard score. Stanwood came right back to make it 27-20, as both teams missed extra points. Cade Younger scored from 75 yards on the ensuing kickoff. On the two-point conversion, Younger hit Whitis on a trick play. But the game wasn’t over, even after Stanwood gave up the ball on downs, because Arlington fumbled, and Stanwood recovered. Stanwood took it to the 1-yard line, but with three seconds left the game-winning field goal was blocked. Whitis was 12-22 for 177 yards and two touchdowns, both to Hudson, who caught six balls for 104 yards. Leading Eagle rusher Tallen Williams did not play for undisclosed reasons.
Also, Everett romped over M-P 43-22, and MG fell to Squalicum 55-20.
Girls swimming
In swimming Tuesday, the small squads at M-P and MG picked up rare team wins. M-P beat MG 108-68 and Mariner 105-79, while MG beat Mariner 94-83 for its first win.
It was the last dual meet for the teams’ seniors, and almost all improved their swim times or dive scores.
“The seniors deserve a major shout out because their leadership has been outstanding,” Coach Jaci Legore-Hodgins said. “It is a team of intelligent, hard- working ladies who give us great hope for the future.” M-P’s 200-yard medley relay team of Katelyn Leary, Lauren Carson, Alexis Bennett and Jennica Harper won with a time of 2 minutes, 6.89 seconds. MG’s team of Emma Savidge, Bindi Pedersen, Isabella Bennett and Adrien Penny was second in 2:11.31.
Cassidy Oneal of M-P won the 200 free in 2:41.57 with MG’s Jada Dahl and Penny finishing second and third.
In the 200 IM, Alexis Bennett was first in 2:35.89, followed by teammate Camryn Cross, and third was Savidge.
Pedersen won the 50 free in 26.61 seconds. Carson took the 1-meter diving with 247.3 points, followed so closely by Lexi Kilbourn of MG with 246.85. Ani Jones of MG took third.
Leary was second and Alexis Bennett third in the 100 butterfly. Dahl was second in the 100 free. Leary was first in the 500 free with Penny placing third.
Harper won the 100 backstroke, with MG’s Savidge and Isabella Bennett second and third.
Pedersen took the 100 breaststroke with Cross of M-P third.
Carson-Alexis Bennett-Leary-Harper won the 200 free relay with MG second with Pedersen-Kilbourn-Isabella Bennett-Penny. In the 400-free relay, M-P’s Harper-Carson-Cross-Oneal won in 4:46.54, with the MG team of Savidge-Kilbourn-Dahl-Shelby Sawyer third, about 39 seconds later.
