The Eagles boys basketball team played with intensity, but lost two non-league games to fall to 0-3 overall. Arlington battled Mt. Vernon Saturday, Dec. 9 before falling 65-60 and lost 72 hours earlier at home to the visiting Lynnwood Royals 53-43.
The battle with the green and white clad Bulldogs of Mt. Vernon figured to be a high-scoring affair when the scoreboard went dark midway through the first quarter.
Seniors Kevin Gray and Tyler Caudle paced the Eagles to a 13-all tie at the time of the power outage and classmate Andrew Disotell added a bucket to pull the visitors to within five 20-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Six-foot-1 inch junior Brandon Gunter went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line and after senior forward David Hawkins scored AHS was within two at 20-18.
Gray drained a three-pointer for Arlingtons first lead at 21-20 and Disotell matched the Bulldog offensive intensity with a rallying basket to make it 23-22.
Caudle joined the three-point parade to knot the game at 26-all before a timeout was called for a well-deserved water break.
Disotell, 6-foot-5 inch Abe Bourasaw and sophomore Cole Carpenter all got on the scoreboard and the shootout was tied at 32-all headed into the locker room.
The Eagles had an offensive scoring night as seven of the eight players in uniform added to the teams scoring total on the night.
The Bulldogs came out on fire in the second half with a 4-0 run, but a basket by Bourasaw brought Arlington within two at 36-34.
After a Bulldog basket Hawkins drained a three-pointer to make it a 38-37 ballgame, and AHS called a timeout trailing 40-37 with 2:43 in the third quarter.
Arlington held Mt. Vernon to only three more points and headed into the final eight minutes of play down 43-37.
Unfortunately for the Vegas gold and white clad Eagles, they could only crawl to within three points a couple of times before running out of gas in the 65-60 defeat.
Bourasaw led the Eagles with 14 points, Gray had 13 and Disotell chipped in 12 in the losing effort.
Coach Brown said he felt pretty good afterward despite the final outcome.
I think we played a lot more unselfishly tonight, he said. Disotell, Hawkins, Gray and Bourasaw played really well and did a better job of sharing the basketball.
He added that the 2006-07 squad is more interested in getting the assist than taking the shot, which explains their unselfish style of play.
The Eagles lost their home-opener Tuesday, Dec. 5 to the Lynnwood Royals 53-43.
Carpenter led the team with 10 points as Arlington fell to 0-2 overall.
